How and why I became a Writer...

My first love was music and I have been a musician all my life. I play several different instruments and love to sing. When the Beatles came out, I like many other kids back then went a bit crazy. Not only did I love each one of them, but I wanted to be one. So for $20.00 I bought an electric guitar from Montgomery Wards. It was so cool and pretty, but I couldn't figure out how to play it. Had no clue what to do. There was no one around who knew how to play and my parents couldn't afford to give me lessons. But after a few years of figuring it out on my own with the help of Alfred's Learn How to Play the Guitar Book, I developed into a decent singer/songwriter performing at various gigs with bands and as a solo act. So, what I'm getting at is I started writing songs. And what I noticed was if I sat down with the goal of writing about a certain topic, it wouldn't happen. But if I just relaxed and stop thinking, words would just pop out of me and I had a song! It was so fun and amazed me how it so magically happened.

Forty years later...I had major insomnia. I could never sleep. I'm serious. Never. Finally I figured if I couldn't sleep, I would start writing down all the thoughts flowing through my head. The next day or two, I read what I wrote and died laughing. I just got the biggest kick out of all the ridiculously funny stuff I wrote about. From then on, I still suffered from insomnia, but kept on writing. I realized I loved to write. The rest is kinda like history or herstory as in my case.

The greatest revelation was when the writing just started flowing out of me. I was channeling my higher self. Some people might say, God or Jesus, or my deceased grandmother, but it was me. And I realized it came from my heart and from my practice of meditation. There is nothing woo-woo about it. Anyone can do it. Some people call it Automatic Writing, and it can be a wonderful way to start your day by asking questions like..."What do I need to know today?" or "Where did I last put my car keys?" Have a pen and paper handy and start writing whatever comes to mind. Try not to think too much. Let it flow from the heart. We'll dwell deeper into this at another time. For now, just have fun seeing what you come up with. Just keep writing. The more you write the better you become and the better you become, the more fun you'll have.
